9 Benefits of Rising Early, and How to Do It

Everyone has this problem even myself was once a late riser. Getting up early and starting the day at or before the sunrise is the desire of most people. But hardly 3 out of 10 people can’t do it. The world’s most successful businessman, entrepreneurs attribute their success partly due to rising early.

Waking up at 6.30 or 7 in the morning didn’t did any good to my studies or work. Things had to change, I decided on working on some of the ideas I found out from some of my favorite productivity blogs. Now lets break up our “sleeping in” routine.

Here are 9 tips for becoming an early riser:

  • One step at a time. You don’t need to jump straight to 4am wakening up routine. Start slowly, 15 to 30 minutes then usual. Now gradually after one or two day cut back your sleeping time. Do this gradually until you find your goal.
  • Put your alarm clock far from you bed. Having an alarm clock right next to your bed is the main reason people can’t wake up, you’ll most certainly shut it off or hit snooze. Before I became an early-riser, usually i hit the snooze or shut without even waking up. Keep it in a place where you cant reach it while sleep but do make sure its not too far or you wont hear the alarm at all :)
  • Change up your tune
If you use the same buzzer day in and day out, you begin to develop immunity to that sound and in few days you’ll start to ignore it completely. New alarm clocks lets you setup different tones for different days. Make sure you change the tune frequently.
  • Sleep early to rise early. Sleeping late at night automatically cuts down the time you get to sleep. Thats why there is always the urge to sleep for a little more time. Sleeping late is very common with today’s teenagers mostly because of watching TV or surfing the Internet. Hey boys and gals stop those social networks and digital junk if you don’t start sleeping early sooner or later your health condition will get severe .Make sure you start to sleep one and a half hours earlier then usual.
  • Go out of the bedroom as soon as you shut off the alarm. Don’t let your brain talk into going back into your bed. Most of the time even if we get up we always tend to think! How about you getting few more minutes of sleep. Just make sure you get up of the bed. Go for a pee or get some fresh air. You mustn’t allow getting back into bed an option.
  • Get into a regime. Make wakening up at a particular time a habit, I recommend setting an alarm once that repeats each day. Just because at weekends you don’t have work, you mustn’t let your inner biological clock disrupt. So make sure routine stays a routine.
  • Give yourself a reason to wakeup. Give yourself a reason to wake up, getting up early just for the sake of it won’t work after few days. Wake up as if you have something to do, it maybe jogging, reading. Personally I would get up early and make myself a cup of hot coffee.
  • Don’t waste your extra time. Waking up early is a great virtue, but you should ask yourself the question! Why am I awake early? Is it just because i wanna checkout those feeds, emails etc. Don’t wake up early and waste the extra time on the internet unless you are major tech-blogger in blogs like Engadget, Gizmodo. You can instead start exercising or meditating, and reading. If you are a married and have kids you can give your wife some help in preparing my kids’ lunches, iron their clothes their many things you can do.
  • Enjoy the beautiful sunrise! Waking up early morning you get to see the most beautiful natural thing, the sunrise. It’s beautiful. Morning is the most peaceful and silent time. The calm winds and nature sets you in the mood for the day. So enjoy waking up early.

Wake up early is a great thing as i have mention earlier, it only takes about 1 or 2 weeks to get used too after that its a smooth sail. Now I feel myself less stressed, I get more things done and I feel happier than I did when I was a late-riser. Now question is did I missed something. How do you wake up earlier?

Those are some good ideas. However, I get about 4-5 hours of sleep a day and even on my worst days my spelling and grammer ar far better than what I’ve just seen.Maybe that early riser stuff isn’t all its cracked up to be. Just a thought. Keith

I am 36 and have always been a night owl. I never got to bed before 11pm and can easily stay up til 1 or 2 am reading, writing, quilting or doing crosswords.

These late hours of course meant that I was not up before 9 am. When our old dog got sick my sleep was distrupted and I was up every day by 7am to take my dog out before she had an accident in the house.

After a week of getting up early and starting to fall asleep earlier (10-11pm) I felt great! Now I naturally wake up by 7am…no alarm needed. I do more before 9am than I do all day!

You know, this is pretty cool… and I have found myself making most of the mistakes in this post….

My husband gets up about an hour before me as he has to be at work even earlier than I have to have the kids ready for school… just before he leaves he brings me a cup of tea and wakes me up….. and I have got into the habit of dozing for a good 45 minutes until the time to get the kids up… and then we are in a rush for breakfast, getting dressed, bags ready etc etc…

If I got up the minute that he brought me my tea (not much point me getting up at 6am when he does, I don’t have to leave the house until just after 8-30am or even 8-45am) I would still have a good hour before I had to hassle the kids down for breakfast.

The other thing I noted was that you mentioned about the regime and getting up at the same time at weekends…. DH is up at the crack of dawn cracking in the week… but at the weekends tends to sleep in till 10am or even later…. I guess it is doing none of us any good (I note that my kids tend to be up at the same time every day, maybe even earlier at weekends, but they find their own breakfast and watch TV till we are up and then run round like loons cos we are late)…

my major problem is that I am a night owl – I feel more alert late in the night and toss and turn if I go to bed early (I am also a MMORPG gamer which doesn’t help the early nights much!) but I really thing just that little thing of setting a solid get-up time weekday or weekend might make a difference…

    thanks for the great post!

It doesn’t matter what time you go to bed or wake up, what matters is how long you sleep and what you do with the time you are awake. If you usually sleep eight hours, get used to sleeping 7 hours. Some of my most productive time is 1am to 3am. Some people are morning people, some people aren’t. I say, don’t fight your natural inclinations just make better use of the time you are awake.

Hello fellows I’m really sorry my spam protector is queuing everyones comment to moderation. I’ll see into the matter ASAP.

@Keith i just started this things theirs bound to be some mistakes. I’m sorry for those. You can tell me were could i improve. If you think you can do better then me, come and do some guest posting here.

@Mandi You can see the results. If you persist doing a thing for some time it ultimately becomes an habit.

@mitzou ha ha… Only if the dog is not a late ariser like his master

@ Tajhia As I already told, you should let your brain to talk you out of getting up early. Quit gaming! hell you are a mother with kids you should rather give examples to them rather then misleading them, go for weekend trips, fishing with your kids in the morning you’ll feel way better.

@Karri early rising is a great thing, if you try it I’m sure you’ll love it.

Good stuff. I can start getting up earlier for a few days then I start hitting snooze more. I think i need to move the alarm like you said.

It’s not what time of day you wake up, it’s about how much sleep you get. Everyone should get at least 8 hrs sleep. If you get 8 hrs sleep during the day and stay up til 3am, then that’s your routine. Your health is what matters not what time you wake up.
